ATHLETICS: Falcons provide an assist with "Night of Champions"

BIRMINGHAM – Over 40 members and student-athletes from the University of Montevallo athletic department recently took part in the Lakeshore Foundation’s third Night of Champions, a celebration of the state of Alabama’s Olympic connection and the culture of the host country for the 2008 Olympic Games, China.

The event, which attracted nearly 700 attendees, served as a marquee fundraising event for the Lakeshore Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that assists persons with physically disabling conditions while also serving as an official U.S. Paralympics training site.      story

 
 
 

        

MEN'S SOCCER: Falcons at No. 4 in NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II Pre-Season Poll

MONTEVALLO (8/19) -- The University of Montevallo will begin the 2008 season ranked in the Top 5 of NCAA Division II Men's Soccer. The Falcons are No. 4 in the first NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II National Rankings poll of the 2008 season, it has been announced.

The four participants in the national semifinals occupy the first four spots. Defending national champion Franklin Pierce (NH) (17-2-4) is No. 1. Lincoln Memorial University (20-4-1) is No. 2. Midwestern State University (TX) (18-3-2) is No. 3.

After UM, Northern Kentucky University, is No. 5. Sonoma State University (CA) is No. 6, Metro State (CO) is No. 7, East Stroudsburg University (PA) is No. 8. Dowling College (NY) is at No. 9, while Lee-McRae College (NC), the team the Falcons defeated in the national quarterfinals rounds out the Top 10. more

 
 

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Lady Falcons at No. 16 in NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II Pre-Season Poll

MONTEVALLO (8/19) -- For the first time in the history of the program, the University of Montevallo women's soccer team will begin a season ranked in the Top 25. The Lady Falcons are No. 16 in the first NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II National Ranking poll of the 2008 season, it has been announced.

National champion University of Tampa (20-2-2) is No. 1. Franklin Pierce University (NH) (18-2-5) is No. 2. Grand Valley State University (MI) (21-1-1), is No. 3. Seattle Pacific University (WA) (23-1-0) is No. 4 and Columbus State University (20-3-2) is No. 5.

University of the Incarnate Word (TX) is No. 6 West Chester University (PA) is No. 7. Minnesota State University-Mankato, College of Saint Rose (NY) and the University of Central Oklahoma round out the Top 10.  more

 



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Falcons add three more for 2008-09

MONTEVALLO (8/22) – The University of Montevallo has added three more student-athletes for the 2008-09 season, it has been announced.

Manal Cali (6-0, Northampton, England), Tateshia Page (6-3, Canton, Miss.) and Wakesha Searight (6-2, East Cleveland, Oh.) will join the Falcons this fall.   more



ATHLETICS: Forrester named Sports Information Director at UM

MONTEVALLO (8/19) -- Sean Forrester has been named the new Director of Sports Information at the University of Montevallo, it has been announced by athletic director Jim Herlihy.

Forrester takes over for Alfred Kojima, who was named Coordinator of Special Projects for Athletics, an administrative position, earlier this summer.     more



BASEBALL: Falcons add fourteen for 2009

MONTEVALLO (8/7)  – The University of Montevallo baseball team has announced their 2009 signee class. 14 student-athletes make up the class of 2009. Ten student-athletes are transferring to UM, while four student-athletes will be incoming freshmen for the 2009 season.   more

 


MEN'S and WOMEN'S SOCCER:  Both Falcons squads picked to finish second in their respective GSC Pre-Season Coaches Polls -- Five Falcons and three Lady Falcons named to Pre-Season All-GSC Teams

BIRMINGHAM (8/7) -- The University of Montevallo men's and women's soccer teams were both selected to finish second in their respective 2008 Gulf South Conference Pre-Season Coaches polls, it has been announced.

Five Falcons were named to the Pre-Season All-GSC Team. Senior forward Jonathan Maloney was a unanimous selection. Also named to the team were senior midfielder James Ward and senior defender Jim Witherow along with sophomore midfielders Milan Pualic and Otavio Tramontina.

Three Lady Falcons were named to the Pre-Season All-GSC Team, including senior defender Adele Jackson, who was named to her third consecutive Pre-Season All-GSC Team. Also selected were senior forward Kami Kapaku along with senior midfielder Stacey Balaam. Jackson and Kapaku were unanimous selections.

VOLLEYBALL: Tortorici named to Pre-Season All-GSC Team -- Falcons picked to finish seventh in GSC Coaches Poll

BIRMINGHAM (8/6) -- For the third consecutive season, Monika Tortorici has been named to the Pre-Season All-GSC Team, it was recently announced.

Torotorici led the team last season in service aces per game (.51), along with blocks (110). She was also second on the team in blocks per game (.88) and third in kills per game (2.36).

As a team, the Falcons were picked to finish seventh (East) in the 2008 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Coaches Poll.   more



ATHLETICS: Montevallo intends to apply for Peach Belt Conference membership

MONTEVALLO — The University of Montevallo announced that it plans to apply for membership in the NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference. Montevallo, which would continue to compete in the 15-team Gulf South Conference during the coming year, would begin play as the 12th member of the Peach Belt Conference in the fall of 2009, pending approval of its application for membership. The decision reflects Montevallo's continued commitment to its student-athletes and the growing regional reputation of the University. more
