FALCONS ADD FOURTEEN FOR 2009
 

MONTEVALLO (8/7)  – The University of Montevallo baseball team has announced their 2009 signee class. Fourteen student-athletes make up the class of 2009. Ten student-athletes are transferring to UM, while four student-athletes will be incoming freshmen for the 2009 season.

Justin Aaron, RHP, Morris… Was 3-3 in 42 innings of work at Jeff State CC this past season.

Dustin Daugherty, OF, Hoover…All-League and recipient of the Larry Giangrosso Coaches Award, while competing as a member of the Alabama State Championship team at Hoover High School…batted .310 with 10 stolen bases this past year.

Michael Fields, LHP, Belleville, Ill… posted 4-2 record in 41 innings and 3.59 ERA. He is a transfer to UM from Southwestern Illinois CC.

Josh Headley, OF, Gardendale…named 2008 North Jefferson News Player of the Year and Birmingham Player of the Year at Gardendale High School…batted .451 with six home runs and 52 RBI.

Kyle Johanson, LHP, Bowman, Ga…can start or relief. He posted a 2-0 record in 36.2 innings with 31 strikeouts and a 3.19 ERA. He is a transfer to UM from Gordon College.

Caleb McLeod, LHP, Hueytown… played in two Junior College World Series at Shelton State the past two season, earned a victory in the 2007 NJCAA World Series and named game MVP. He posted a 6-2 record this past season and was 9-0 in 2007. He is a former First Team All-State and All-County selection and named to the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Super 100.

Andy Revel, IF, Albertville…solid defender competing at Snead State CC.

Wes Rich, RHP, Pelham… posted 7-2 record with 70 strikeouts in 40 innings of work this past season at Pelham High School…named a member of the Alabama State East-West All-Star Team and named to the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Top 160 as a junior in 2007.

Brett Roney, IF/RHP, Wetumpka…named 2008 Under Armour Pre-Season All-American…also a member of the 2008 Montgomery Area All-Metro Team, All-County Team, and member of the Alabama East-West All-Star Team…batted .348 with 11 stolen bases, while posting a 5-2 record with 55 strikeouts in 44 innings of work this past season.

Chris Sosebee, OF, Warrior…batted .416 with 19 home runs and 61 RBI this past season at Jeff State CC. He is a former First Team All-State selection and was 2008 Alabama Junior College North Division Player of the Year…established single season and career home run records at Jeff State.

James Stoddard, LHP, Meridian, Miss…posted 8-1 record with a 2.98 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 68 innings of work at East Mississippi CC…he was also named First Team All-Mississippi Junior College Athletic Conference this past season.

Dane Swearingen, IF/OF, Bay Minette…batted .350 this past season at Bevill-Fayette CC...versatile player who will add depth to the infield and outfield.

Alex Turner, SS, Adamsville…batted .300 with five home runs at Jackson State CC in Tennessee.

Mat Turner, RHP/IF, Louisville, Ky… batted .300 in one season at Labette CC in Kansas…will have three years of eligibility.

"I am very excited about our first recruiting class, head coach John Jarnagin said. " We were able to get a good mix of high school and junior college players. At the same time, we filled some immediate needs with power, speed and pitching. Coach Smith did a great job of getting excellent students who will be solid baseball players. We are expecting this group to help us continue the tradition of competitive University of Montevallo baseball."

UM concluded the 2008 season with a record of 36-25 overall and advanced to the championship game of the 2008 Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament in Millington, Tenn.
