Alford Lends a
Hand to Locks of Love
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Laura Alford
(Brandon, Mississippi), a member of the University of Montevallo
women’s soccer team, reached out to help sufferers of long-term medical
hair loss by donating her hair to Locks of Love. As a non-profit
organization, Locks of Love aid financially disadvantaged children in
the United States and Canada, whereby they create the highest quality of
hair prosthetics using hair from donators. Cutting a staggering 14
inches off her hair in order to contribute to Locks of Love, Laura found
out about the organization through family and friends, as her sister had
previously donated two years ago. more
Women’s Soccer
visits Montevallo High School
MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
Members of the University of Montevallo women’s soccer team visited
local Montevallo High School to embrace a class of 9th
graders and promote the importance of health and fitness. The initiative
was organized by Chris Stano, a physical education teacher and coach at
Montevallo High. He had invited Dr. Carolyn Miller-Kirby, a professor of
Kinesiology here at the University, as a guest speaker in order to
inspire the teenagers to recognize the importance of a healthy
lifestyle, and the rewarding factors that participating in sports can
offer. Dr. Miller-Kirby thought it would be great to involve the women’s
soccer team as the class would be able to relate to them as role models.
In addition, she thought it would be fascinating for the class to meet
some of the international players and learn about the status of health
and fitness in different countries in comparison to the United States.
