BIRMINGHAM (8/6) --
For the third consecutive season,
Monika Tortorici has been named to
the Pre-Season All-GSC Team, it was
recently announced.
Torotorici led the team last season in
service aces per game (.51), along with
blocks (110). She was also second on the
team in blocks per game (.88) and third
in kills per game (2.36). Along with
sister Lauren, the two eclipsed the
1,000 mark in career kills. The two were
also named to the GSC All-Academic Team
as unanimous selections.
Lauren was also a Second Team All-Gulf
South Conference selection in 2007.
As a team, the Falcons were picked to finish
seventh (East) in the 2008 Gulf South
Conference Volleyball Coaches Poll.
The University of West Florida was
picked first, collecting 35 points. UWF edged out University of
North Alabama (32), who was picked to finish first in
2007. The University of West Georgia was picked
third with 23 points.
The University of Alabama-Huntsville and University of
West Alabama tied for fourth with 19 points. Valdosta
State University (10) and UM (9) rounds out the poll.
In the GSC West, Harding University was picked to finish first (34).
Arkansas Tech (31) was picked second, while Henderson
State (28) was third.
UM will begin
the 2008 season in Memphis, Tenn. at a
tournament hosted by Christian Brothers
University Aug. 29-30.
