
LAKE BUENA VISTA,
Fla. -- The University of Montevallo
will be one of eight schools to
participate in the 12th annual Disney's
Division II Tip-Off Classic, to be held
November 6-9 at the Disney's Wide World
of Sports Complex and Walt Disney World
Resort.
In addition to UM, the 2008 tournament
field includes Minnesota State
University-Mankato, Lees-McRae College,
University of Southern Indiana,
University of Minnesota-Duluth, Saint
Martin's University, Bentley College and
Florida Southern College. The Classic,
which is produced with the support of
the NCAA Division II Commissioner's
Association, regularly features schools
ranked in the BCA Coaches Poll,
including Top 25 finisher Florida
Southern College. Minnesota
State-Mankato received votes in the
final poll of the season.
"Disney's Division II Tip-Off Classic
has become one of the best Division II
men's and women's tournaments in the
country," said Don Landry, former
president of the Division II
Commissioners Association and Tip-Off
Classic tournament director. "The
combination of the strong field of teams
and Disney experience makes this an
attractive destination for our colleges
and universities."
The 2007 Men's Tip-Off Classic
Tournament crowned Grand Valley State
University champions in a 53-46 win over
Barry University in the Group Dedication
Division, while in a battle of the
unbeaten, No. 1 Winona State secured its
championship run with a 93-74 victory
over Assumption College in the Group
Teamwork Division.
Winona State's John Smith, who averaged
19.3 points and 10.7 rebounds for the
tournament was named Most Outstanding
Player in the Group Teamwork Division,
while Jason Jamerson for Grand Valley
State who scored a game high 22 points
in their win over over Barry University
was named the Most Outstanding Player in
the Group Dedication Division.
The 2008 tournament will feature two
divisions, the Group Learning Division
and the Group Sportsmanship Division. UM
is included in the Group Sportsmanship
Division with Florida Southern,
Lees-McRae and Minnesota-Duluth.
