ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO DEFEATS MONTEVALLO AT GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
 

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (3/5) --- The Falcons overcame a 13-point second half deficit, but at the end, came up on the short end of a 63-61 decision to the University of Arkansas-Monticello, in the opening round of the 2008 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss. Wednesday night.

Terrill Humphrey scored a game-high 30 points, and was a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line. Eric Turner also scored in double figures, finishing with 11 points.

Raymond Wright scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead UAM (17-11).

UM trailed by seven points (36-29) at halftime and by 13 points (48-35) with just under 14 minutes remaining. UM outscored UAM 19-8 over the next nine minutes to trim the deficit to two points. After UAM scored a basket, Humphrey sank his third 3-point basket of the night to make it a 58-57 game. Later, Humphrey was fouled and made two free throws to give UM a 59-58 lead.

AUM regained the lead on a basket by Marcus Baham with three minutes remaining. Turner drove for a layup with 2:04 remaining to give UM a 61-60 lead.

UM turned the ball over with just over a minute remaining. Bhaam was fouled with 1:10 remaining and made two free throws to give UAM a 62-61 lead. The Falcons then turned the ball over again in the closing seconds. Baham was fouled again and made one free throw to close out the scoring.

UM concludes the 2007-2008 season with a record of 12-16 overall.

HUMPHREY NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE
 

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (3/4) -- Junior guard Terrill Humphrey has been named to the First Team All-Gulf South Conference, it has been announced.

Humphrey leads the team and is tied for fourth in the Gulf South Conference in scoring (18.0 ppg), leads in 3-point field goals made and is seventh in 3-point field goal percentage. The St. Augustine, Fla. native is eighth in the nation in 3-point field goals made (92). He has scored in double figures in 22 of 26 games this season, including the last 10 consecutive games. He has also made at least five 3-point baskets in eight games this season, including tying a school single-game record of eight 3-point baskets against Augusta State University.

UM (12-15) competes at the 2008 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championships beginning Wednesday. UM (No. 5 East) will meet the University of Arkansas-Monticello (No. 4 West) in a first round game Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on UM Internet Radio, with Jason Green describing the play-by-play action and will also be available on video pay-per-view broadband, via the Gulf South Conference website.
 

MONTEVALLO PUNCHES TICKET TO POSTSEASON WITH VICTORY OVER WEST ALABAMA
 

LIVINGSTON (3/1) -- Anthony Brown scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Terrill Humphrey scored 16 points to lead the University of Montevallo to a 69-56 victory over the University of West Alabama in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game in Livingston on Saturday.

The victory allowed the Falcons to clinch the fifth and final berth in the GSC East for the 2008 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championships in Southaven, Miss. beginning Wednesday.

Brown and Humphrey were the only players on either team to score in double figures. Tyler Roden led UWA (3-9 GSC, 10-17) with nine points.

UM jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first five minutes of the half. The lead grew to as many as 15 points in the half, before a UWA run trimmed the lead to six points. (30-24) with three minutes remaining. UM responded with a 9-0 run to close out the half, capped by a 3-point play by Chris Venoy to give the Falcons a 39-24 lead at halftime.

UM shot 56 percent (25-for-45) in the game and 64 percent (14-for-22) in the first half. UWA was 39 percent (20-for-52), 29 percent (7-for-24) from the 3-point line.

The Falcons (5-7 GSC, 12-15) will have a chance to defend their Gulf South Conference championship, but will have to play four games in five days to win the trophy. UM, the No .5 seed (East) will play No. 4 seed University of Arkansas-Monticello (16-11) in a first round game Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on UM Internet Radio with Jason Green describing the play-by-play action. MONTEVALLO FALLS TO VALDOSTA STATE
 

MONTEVALLO (2/25) -- An up and down season continued for the University of Montevallo men's basketball team as they dropped an 81-68 decision to Valdosta State University, in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Monday night.

Three Falcons finished in double figures. Terrill Humphrey scored 21 points. Eric Turner scored a season-best 16 points, including four 3-point baskets. Jonathon Hewitt also scored in double figures, finishing with 11 points.

Ricky Coleman led VSU (7-4 GSC, 16-10) with 24 points.

UM suffered through a poor shooting second half, converting 31 percent (9-for-29) from the field and only 20 percent (2-for-10) from the 3-point line. VSU shot 52 percent (15-for-29) in the second half and 52 percent (34-for-66) for the game.

The teams battled through the first half, tying on eight occasions. UM held a four-point (35-31) lead but were outscored 11-4 over the final three minutes of the half to trail by three points (42-39) at halftime. VSU pulled ahead by 10 points (57-47) with 14 minutes remaining, when UM scored the next six points to pull to within four points with 12 minutes remaining. A 3-point play, and subsequent basket by VSU pushed the deficit back to nine points.

The loss to VSU, combined with a victory by West Alabama over West Florida on Monday has settled the post-season picture for UM (4-7 GSC, 11-15).

A victory at West Alabama on Saturday, and the Falcons will earn the fifth and final berth (East Division) for the 2008 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championships. A loss to UWA and the season will come to an end.

MONTEVALLO HELPS POST-SEASON CHANCES WITH VICTORY OVER WEST FLORIDA
 

MONTEVALLO (2/23) -- The University of Montevallo men's basketball team took a step closer to the post-season with a 78-67 victory over the University of West Florida, in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Saturday night.

The victory propels the Falcons into the fifth and final post-season berth for the GSC East Division with two games remaining. UM (4-6) is one game ahead of UWF (3-7) and two games ahead of West Alabama (2-8). A victory by UM over Valdosta State on Monday will clinch a berth for the 2008 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Championships.

Tauras Dortch led UM with 24 points, including five 3-point baskets. Terrill Humphrey added 20 points, with five 3-point baskets of his own. Anthony Brown posted a double-double, his fifth of the season, finishing with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

UM managed to sink 52 percent (12-for-23) from beyond the arc, while UWF managed only 27 percent (6-for-22).

The Falcons built a large first-half lead, making 50 percent (14-for-28) of their attempts from the field and 62 percent (8-for-13) from beyond the arc. UM led by 24 points (44-20) at halftime.

UWF battled back, trimming the lead to six points (61-55) with just over five minutes remaining. Humphrey was able to answer with a 3-point basket, pushing the lead back to nine.

UM (4-6 GSC, 11-14) will host Valdosta State University for a Gulf South Conference game and final home game of the 2007-2008 season Monday night at 7:30 p.m. The game is also scheduled to be broadcast on UM Internet Radio, as well as video broadband through PennAtlantic. WEST GEORGIA DEFEATS MONTEVALLO
 

CARROLLTON, Ga. (2/18) -- The Falcons utilized a second half scoring run in their victory in Huntsvillle on Saturday. On Monday, it was the Wolves that utilized a second half scoring run to pull away from UM. West Georgia went on to defeat the Falcons, 81-67, in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game in Carrollton, Ga.

UM trailed by one point (39-38) at halftime. UWG put together a 13-2 scoring run over the first four minutes of the second half to lead by double digits.

Terrill Humphrey led UM with 27 points, 17 in the second half. Anthony Brown was the only other Falcon to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Doug Daniels led UWG (6-4 GSC, 14-10) with 19 points. Terrence Hundley added 16 points, 10 in the second half.

UM was able to make their first nine shots over the first nine minutes of the game and build a seven-point (20-13) lead. Back-to-back 3-point baskets by UWG trimmed the lead to one point, and the teams stayed within five points the rest of the half.

UM (3-6 GSC, 10-14) will host the University of West Florida for a key Gulf South Conference game Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. It will also be Senior Recognition Night, as the 2007-08 UM Men's Basketball Seniors will be honored. MONTEVALLO PULLS AWAY FROM UAH FOR GSC VICTORY
 

HUNTSVILLE (2/16) -- The University of Montevallo men's basketball team utilized a second-half scoring run to pull away for a 74-52 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville, in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game in Huntsville Saturday night.

With the game tied at 44-44, UM outscored UAH 30-8 over the final 11 1/2 minutes of the game.
and kept UAH off the scoreboard for the final five minutes.

Terrill Humphrey led UM with 19 points. Anthony Brown scored 17 points, while Jonathon Hewitt scored 16 points.

Cody Jones led UAH (5-4 GSC, 12-12) with 22 points.

UM led by five points (31-26) at halftime, and by nine points (37-28), when UAH put together a 9-0 run to tie the game at 37-37.

UAH did not shoot well from the 3-point line, making 14 percent (3-for-21) for the game and 8 percent (1-for-12) in the first half.

UM shot well from field, 46 percent (24-for-52), and very well from the free throw line, converting 81 percent (17-for-21).

The victory also snaps a four-game losing streak, and gives UM a sweep in the season series, which could prove beneficial for the post-season picture.

UM (3-5 GSC, 10-13) travels to the University of West Georgia for a Gulf South Conference game Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

FAULKNER DEFEATS MONTEVALLO
 

MONTEVALLO (2/12) -- Terrill Humphrey and Taurus Dortch scored 16 points and 12 points, respectively, in a loss to Faulkner University, in a non-conference men's basketball game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Tuesday night.

UM trimmed a nine-point first half deficit to two points (38-36) at halftime and managed to take a two point lead (50-48) with 14 minutes remaining. Back-to-back baskets by Faulkner gave the Eagles the lead for good.

The Falcons shot fairly well (52 percent) in the first half, and managed 47 percent (27-for-58) from the field.

UM (9-13) travels to the University of Alabama-Huntsville for a Gulf South Conference game Saturday night at 7 p.m.

NORTH ALABAMA OUTLASTS MONTEVALLO IN TRIPLE OVERTIME
 

MONTEVALLO (2/9) -- The Falcons were able to come back from deficits at the end of the second half and first two overtimes, however could not come back from a deficit in a third extra session, as the University of Montevallo eventually dropped a 109-99 decision to the University of North Alabama, in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center on Saturday.

UM overcame deficits of four points (second half), eight points (first overtime) and three points (second overtime).

Five Falcons scored in double figures. Terrill Humphrey led UM with 26 points, 16 in overtime, 12 in the first overtime. Tauras Dortch scored 18 points. Anthony Brown posted a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds . DeAndre Miranda and Shon Caston added 11 points each. Miranda also had four blocks, Dortch had three streals, and DeSean Gist had five assists.

Casey Holt led UNA (5-2 GSC, 18-7) with 28 points, including five 3-point baskets.

UM held a five-point lead (52-47) midway through the second half. UNA outscored UM 17-8 to lead by four points with three minutes remaining. Baskets by Caston and Dortch tied the game at 64-64. UNA failed on three attempts to win the game  in the final minute of regulation.

In the first overtime, UM fell behind and trailed by eight points (80-72) with 1:23 remaining. Humphrey was fouled attempting a 3-point basket and sank all three free throws to start a furious comeback.  The St. Augustine, Fla. native accounted for 12 points of a 14-6 UM scoring barrage. Trailing by two (86-84), Dortch drove for a layup with five seconds remaining to force a second overtime.

In the second overtime UM trailed by three points. A layup by Caston cut the deficit to one. After a UNA free throw, Jonathan Hewitt drove for a layup to tie the game. UNA answered with two free throws. Hewitt made a second basket to tie the game at 94-94. UNA missed on three tries in the last minute as the teams moved on to a third overtime.

UM fell behind quickly in the third overtime, but could not recover as UNA managed to outscore UM 15-5 in the final period.

UM (2-5 GSC, 9-12) will host Faulkner University for a non-conference game Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

WEST ALABAMA DEFEATS MONTEVALLO
 

MONTEVALLO (2/2) -- The University of Montevallo dropped a 73-62 decision to the University of West Alabama, in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Saturday night.

Tauras Dortch and Brian Carlyle led UM with 13 points each. DeAndre Miranda also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Glenn Miles led UWA (1-5 GSC, 6-13) with 20 points.

UM fell behind by as many as eight points and trailed by five points (38-33) at halftime. UM managed to trim the deficit to four points (56-52) with 6:17 remaining, but could get no closer the rest of the night. UWA kept their lead via the 3-point line, as UWA managed 56 percent (10-for-18) from the beyond the arc. UM managed 27 percent (4-for-15) from the 3-point line and 43 percent (23-for-53) from the field.

UM (2-4 GSC, 9-11) will host the University of North Alabama for a Gulf South Conference game Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

VALDOSTA STATE SLIPS PAST MONTEVALLO
 

VALDOSTA, Ga. (1/28) – Ricky Coleman hit a basket with 7.1 seconds remaining to lift Valdosta State University to a 70-69 victory over the University of Montevallo, in a Gulf South Conference men’s basketball game in Valdosta, Ga. Monday night.

UM had an opportunity to win the game, but missed on one shot attempt and were unable to get a second shot off as time expired.

Four Falcons scored in double figures. Terrill Humphrey led UM with 19 points. Anthony Brown and Tauras Dortch added 15 points each. Eric Turner scored 10 points. Humphrey collected five rebounds, while Turner had four steals.

Devario Hudson led VSU (3-2 GSC, 11-8) with 24 points, 17 in the second half.

The Falcons made six of their first eight shots to build a double-digit lead in the first half and led by as many as 15 points. UM led by 12 points (33-21)  and was outscored 10-2 in the final five minutes to lead by four points (35-31) at halftime.

Later, with the game tied at 52-52,  VSU put together a 10-2 run  over a three minute stretch to lead by eight. UM eventually trimmed the deficit to two points (68-66) when Turner sank a 3-point basket to give the Falcons a 69-68 lead with 1:16 remaining.

On their next possession, VSU missed on a 3-point basket. UM collected the rebound, moved the ball to the front court and called for a timeout with 37 seconds remaining. However, UM turned the ball over via an errant pass with 17 seconds remaining. VSU worked the ball to Coleman for the game-winning basket.

VSU had a 35-28 advantage in rebounding, with Hudson collecting eight rebounds. UM shot fairly well for the game (45 percent) and well at the free throw line (11-for-15).

UM (2-3 GSC, 9-10) will host the University of West Alabama for a Gulf South Conference game Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on UM Internet Radio, with Jason Green describing the play-by-play action.

FALCONS CLIMB BACK TO .500 OVERALL
 WITH VICTORY OVER WEST FLORIDA
 

PENSACOLA, Fla. (1/26) -- Terrill Humphrey scored a game-high 23 points with five 3-point baskets, including two in overtime, to lead the University of Montevallo to a 75-70 overtime victory over the University of West Florida, in a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game in Pensacola, Fla. Saturday afternoon.

Four Falcons scored in double figures. Anthony Brown and Tauras Dortch added 13 and 12 points, respectively. DeAndre Miranda posted a double-double with 10 points, while grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.

Josh Jackson led UWF (0-4 GSC, 10-8) with 19 points, including four 3-point baskets.

Humphrey made back-to-back 3-point baskets to start the overtime period. After the teams exchanged baskets, Ryan Henry made a layup and later a 3-point basket with 44 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one point (71-70). Shon Caston was fouled and made one of two free throws to make it a 72-70 game. After UWF missed on a basket, Dortch was fouled and made two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to increase the lead to four points. Dortch was later fouled with seven seconds remaining, made one of two free throws to close out the scoring.

UM trailed by as many as nine points in the second half. The Falcons initially overtook the lead midway in the half and led by three points (60-57) with two minutes remaining. Deondre Boyton made a 3-point basket to tie the game at 60-60. UWF was able to take a 62-60 lead, when Humphrey made a 3-point basket with 47 seconds remaining for a 63-62 lead. UWF was fouled with 28 seconds but made only one of two free throws to tie the game at 63-63. UM worked for the last shot, missed on one go-ahead basket by Dortch in the closing seconds and a 3-point basket try by Humphrey as time expired.

The Falcons shot 38 percent (24-for-64) from the field and 31 percent (8-for-26) from the 3-point line.

The victory evens the Falcons GSC and overall record at .500.

BROWN POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE
MONTEVALLO DEFEATS CONCORDIA-SELMA
 

MONTEVALLO (1/21) -- Anthony Brown posted a double-double with 14 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and one key defensive rebound in the closing seconds as the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team defeated Concordia College-Selma, 65-62, in a non-conference game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and Student Activity Center Monday night.

UM led 64-62 in the final seconds and survived three scoring chances by the visiting Hornets. Brown collected the rebound after a Concordia missed and called for a timeout with three seconds remaining. After an inbounds pass, Tauras Dortch was fouled and made one of two free throws  with 1.7 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.

The Falcons did not shoot well from beyond the arc, converting 29 percent (6-for-21) for the game and 20 percent (2-for-10) in the first half. UM started slowly making only four of their first 15 attempts, and settling for 33 percent (9-for-27) in the first half. UM also had 15 turnovers, which was a factor in a nine-point (33-24) deficit at halftime.

The shooting improved in the second half, UM making 46 percent (13-for-28) from the field. UM made a scoring run five minutes into the half, putting together a 13-4 run over a four minute stretch turning a seven-point deficit into a two-point lead (49-47). DeSean Gist gave UM their first lead of the second half on a 3-point basket with 11 minutes remaining.

In the final minute with the game tied at 62-62, Dortch was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 63-62 lead. CC missed a layup, Shon Caston was fouled and he made one of two free throws with 37 seconds remaining, to make it a 64-62 game.

DeAndre Miranda also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots.

NORTH ALABAMA DEFEATS MONTEVALLO
 

FLORENCE (1/19) -- The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team dropped a 79-71 decision to the University of North Alabama, in a Gulf South Conference men’s basketball game in Florence Saturday afternoon.

Terrill Humphrey led UM with 22 points, including six 3-point baskets. Brian Carlyle and Anthony Brown also scored in double figures, finishing with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Casey Holt led UNA (2-1 GSC, 14-6 with 30 points.

The Falcons built a nine point lead in the first half. UNA utilized an 8-0 run to retake the lead. UNA would lead by three points (33-30) at halftime, before scoring the first nine points of the second half to lead by double digits. UNA would lead by as many as 15 points in the second half. Humphrey made four of his six 3-point baskets during the a scoring run to help pull the Falcons to within three points.

Shon Caston grabbed eight rebounds, while Eric Turner had four assists.

MONTEVALLO EVENS GSC RECORD WITH VICTORY OVER UAH
 

MONTEVALLO (1/14) -- The University of Montevallo men's basketball team evened their Gulf South Conference record at 1-1, after posting a 62-49 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville, in a Gulf South Conference game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Monday night.

Terrill Humphrey led UM with 18 points, with three 3-point baskets. Jonathan Hewitt added 13 points, while Anthony Brown scored 11 points, and grabbed six rebounds.

Cody Jones led UAH (1-1 GSC, 7-9) with 13 points.

UM shot well in the second half, converting 68 percent (13-for-19) from the field and 52 percent (24-for-46) for the game. UAH did not shoot well from the 3-point line, 22 percent (6-for-27) for the game and 16 percent (3-for-19) in the first half.

UM led by four points (25-21) at halftime. UAH trailed by two points (29-27) and hit back-to-back jumpers to take a 31-29 lead. After a dunk by Brian Carlyle, UAH missed on a 3-point try. The Falcons got the ball back to Humphrey who was fouled in the act of sinking a 3-point basket. The free throw gave UM a four-point play, and four-point (35-31) lead.

UAH pulled to within one point (41-40) when a 3-point basket by Hewitt with seven minutes remaining, started a 10-1 run for the Falcons. UAH would be no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

MONTEVALLO DEFEATED BY WEST GEORGIA IN GSC OPENER
 

MONTEVALLO (1/12) -- The University of Montevallo men's basketball team dropped a Gulf South Conference men's basketball game to the University of West Georgia, 81-66, in action at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Saturday night.

Three Falcons managed to finish in double figure scoring. Tauras Dortch led UM with 25 points. Terrill Humphrey added 13 points (with four 3-point baskets) while Jonathon Hewitt scored 12 points.

Doug Daniels led UWG (1-0 GSC, 8-5) with 25 points, including three 3-point baskets.

UM enjoyed their only lead of the night in the opening minute. Humphrey made a 3-point basket in the opening seconds. UWG scored the next seven points. After UM scored four points to tie the game, UWG put together a 10-3 run over a three-minute period. UWG led by 11 points (37-26) at halftime and as many as 20 points in the second half.

The Falcons suffered through a poor shooting first half (27 percent, 8-for-30) and 50 percent (5-for-10) from the free throw line. For the game, UM was  38 percent (23-for-61) while UWG was 55 percent (29-for-53) from the field. UWG did not shoot well from the 3-point line (31 percent) but converted 67 percent (16-for-24) of their free throws in the second half.

MONTEVALLO (1/8) -- Terrill Humphrey scored a season-best 31 points, with six 3-point baskets, while Anthony Brown collected a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to lead the University of Montevallo to a 101-68 victory over Carver Bible College, in a non-conference men's basketball game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Tuesday night.

Four Falcons scored in double figures. Tauras Dortch and DeAndre Miranda added 15 and 12 points, respectively. UM had a team season-best 29 assists, eight by Shon Caston and six each by Humphrey and Eric Turner.

Joshua Caston led CBC (1-17) with 16 points.

UM shot well for the game (53 percent) and in the first half (60 percent). The 3-point shooting drifted some in the second half, however 50 percent shooting (5-for-10) from the 3-point line helped UM to a 16-point (56-40) lead by halftime.

The Falcons stumbled briefly in the second half, not scoring for the first four minutes of the half. UM then pulled away, outscoring CBC 19-3 over a five minute period to build the lead to 30 points. UM led by as many as 38 points late.

The victory snaps a four-game losing skid.

UM had a decided advantage in rebounding (53-36) and shot much better at the free throw line, converting 10-for-14 from the line. Dortch was a perfect 6-for-6.

PALM BEACH ATLANTIC DEFEATS MONTEVALLO AT HOLIDAY INN SOUTH/LEDGER CLASSIC
 

LAKELAND, Fla. (12/29) -- The Falcons gave up a scoring run in the second half, as UM dropped their fourth consecutive game with a 76-65 setback to Palm Beach Atlantic University in second day action at the Holiday Inn South/Ledger Classic, hosted by Florida Southern College, in non-conference action in Lakeland, Fla. Saturday night.

Four Falcons finished in double figures in scoring, led by Terrill Humphrey with 19 points, including five 3-point baskets. Jonathon Hewitt (13), Anthony Brown (12) and DeAndre Miranda (11) also scored in double figures.

Fitzroy Anthony led PBAC (2-11) and three other Sailfish double-figure scorers with a game-high 24 points, including five 3-point baskets.

UM got off to a slow start (1-for-11) in the first six minutes of the game and  trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half. UM did not make their first 3-point basket until Humphrey made one with just over three minutes remaining in the half. UM managed to trim the deficit to 10 points (38-28) at halftime.

Trailing by seven points (43-36) with 16 minutes remaining, UM went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take their first lead of the game. After an exchange of baskets, a basket by PBAC was answered with a 3-point basket by Hewitt, giving UM a 49-47 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.

PBAC put together a 20-2 scoring run over the next six minutes to pass and pull away from UM.

UM did not shoot well from the 3-point line, converting 29 percent (8-for-28) on their attempts. PBAC managed to make 52 percent (12-for-23) of their attempts from beyond the arc.

Brown grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Turner was credited with six assists.

ST. JOSEPH'S DEFEATS MONTEVALLO AT HOLIDAY INN SOUTH/LEDGER CLASSIC
 

LAKELAND, Fla. (12/28) -- UM was kept off the scoreboard in the final 7 1/2 minutes of the second half, in an eventual 70-61 loss to St. Joseph's College (IN) in first day action at the Holiday Inn South/Ledger Classic, hosted by Florida Southern College, in non-conference action in Lakeland, Fla. Friday night.

Shon Caston sank two free throws with 7:35 remaining to give UM at the time a six point (61-55) lead. The Falcons went 0-7 (0-5 from the 3-point line) and committed six of their 20 total turnovers during the final stretch.

Jonathon Hewitt led UM with 14 points. Terrill Humphrey added 13 points, including three 3-point baskets. Brian Carlyle also scored in double figures with 10 points, while collecting a team-high nine rebounds.

Devin Thomas led SJC (6-3) with 13 points.

In the first half, UM trailed by nine points (30-21) with just under eight minutes remaining. The Falcons put together an 11-2 run over a three minute period, capped by a basket by Anthony Brown to tie the game at 32-32. A free throw by Humphrey gave UM a 33-32 lead. After a basket by SJC, Hewitt scored the final basket of the half to give UM a one point (35-34) lead at halftime.

Later, with the game tied at 55-55 two free throws and a basket in consecutive possessions by Carlyle gave the Falcons a 59-55 lead with eight minutes remaining.

UM shot fairly well in the first half, 48 percent (13-for-27) from the field, 80 percent (4-for-5) from the 3-point line and 71 percent (5-for-7) from the free throw line. Unfortunately, poor shooting doomed the Falcons in the second half, as the did not make a 3-point basket (0-for-7), 40 percent (8-for-20) from the field and just 56 percent (10-for-18) from the free throw line. Neither team shot well from the 3-point line with UM at 33 percent (4-for-12) and SJC at 25 percent (5-for-20).

No. 7 DRURY DEFEATS MONTEVALLO AT LAS VEGAS HIGH DESERT CLASSIC -- HUMPHREY TABBED FOR ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
 

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (12/19) -- The Falcons were defeated by No. 7 Drury University, 67-62, in second day action at the Las Vegas High Desert Classic, hosted by the University of Central Missori Wednesday afternoon.

Terrill Humphrey and Tauras Dortch led UM with 16 points each. The two also made two 3-point baskets each. Anthony Brown also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points. For the second consecutive game, DeAndre Miranda posted a double-digit rebound effort, this time grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.

Steven Gum and Tim Brown combined for 32 points and eight 3-point baskets to lead DU (8-1). The two sank four 3-point baskets each.

UM trailed by eight points (49-41) with 12 minutes remaining in the second half, and put together a 10-0 run over the next 2 1/2 minutes to take their first lead of the half. Later, UM led by four points (55-51) with 7 1/2 minutes remaining when DU scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. With UM trailing by three in the last minute, UM missed on a 3-point attempt and DU was able to make free throws to secure the victory.

The Falcons did not shoot well from the outside, making 25 percent (4-for-16) from beyond the arc. UM also shot 43 percent (23-for-54) from the field, 50 percent (12-for-24) in the first half. DU made 53 percent (8-for-15) of their attempts from the 3-point line and 50 percent (25-for-50) from the field.

After the tournament Terrill Humphrey was named to the All-Tournament team.

UM (5-5) will take a break for Christmas and returns to action on Dec. 28 and 29 in Lakeland, Fla. to participate in a tournament hosted by Florida Southern College. UM will play St. Joseph's College (IN) on Dec. 28 and Palm Beach Atlantic University on Dec. 29. Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. (ET). MONTEVALLO FALLS TO CENTRAL MISSOURI AT LAS VEGAS HIGH DESERT CLASSIC
 

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (12/18) -- The Falcons ended up on the short end of a 66-60 decision to the University of Central Missouri in first day action at the Las Vegas High Desert Classic, hosted by UCM Tuesday afternoon.

Terrill Humphrey scored a game-high 23 points, including four 3-point baskets. Eric Turner also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points. DeAndre Miranda added seven points and grabbed a season-best 16 rebounds. Brian Carlyle and Shon Caston also scored seven points each.

Kevin Wollbrinck and Joe Young led UCM (6-1) with 15 points each. Wollbrinck also grabbed 10 rebounds.

UM started slow and trailed by seven points (17-10) with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. UM went on a 7-0 run, keeping UCM off the scoreboard for 5 1/2 minutes, to tie the game at 17-17. Later with the score tied at 24-24, UM outscored UCM 8-4 in the final 2 1/2 minutes to lead by four points (32-28) into intermission.

In the second half with the game tied at 38-38, UCM put together a 7-0 run of their own and built their lead to as many as 11 points. With UCM leading by 10 points (57-47) with eight minutes remaining, a basket by Caston, a 3-point basket by Humphrey and a basket by Turner in the span of just under two minutes trimmed the deficit to three points (57-54).  After a UCM free throw, Turner was fouled with just under five minutes remaining. He made two free throws to make it a 58-56 game. On the next UCM possession, Young made a 3-point basket to push the deficit back to five points.

UCM took advantage of opportunities at the free throw line in the second half, converting 11-of-18 attempts and 18-for-30 for the game. UM did not fare as well, making just 4-of-10 in the second half and 43 percent (6-for-14) from the line for the game.

MONTEVALLO DEFEATS CUMBERLAND
 

MONTEVALLO (12/7) -- Tauras Dortch scored a game-high 23 points, including 18 points in the first half, to lead the University of Montevallo to a 66-52 victory over Cumberland University (TN), in a non-conference men's basketball game at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Friday night.

Jonathon Hewitt and Terrill Humphrey also scored in double figures, finishing with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Anthony Brown grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Thomas Douglas led CU (4-3) with 13 points.

UM shot well in the first half, connecting on 59 percent (19-for-32) from the field and four 3-point baskets. UM started slow, but warmed up midway through the first half, maintaining a double-digit lead in the final eight minutes of the half. UM led by 20 points (43-23) at halftime and led no less than 13 points the rest of the way.

UM did not fare well at the 3-point line (5-for-15), nor at the free throw line connecting on 35 percent (5-for-14) of their attempts.

UM (5-3) will take a break for finals and will return to action on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 18 and 19 in Las Vegas, Nev., as the Falcons compete in the Las Vegas High Desert Classic, hosted by the University of Central Missouri. MONTEVALLO EARNS KEY IN-REGION WIN AT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
 

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (12/4) -- Tauras Dortch led five Falcon double figure scorers with 19 points to lead the University of Montevallo to an 87-80 victory at Christian Brothers University, in a ken in-region men's basketball game in Memphis, Tenn. Tuesday night.

Terrill Humphrey scored 14 points, including four 3-point baskets. Shon Caston scored 13 points and was 5-for-5 from the field. Anthony Brown and Jonathon Hewitt added 12 points each. Brown also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Kevin Weybright scored a game-high 29 points, with five 3-point baskets to lead CBU.

UM trailed by one point (40-39) at halftime and fell behind by six points (54-48) five minutes into the second half. A 9-2 run gave the Falcons their first lead of the half. Later, with the game tied at 67-67 with seven minutes remaining, UM put together an 11-0 run in the span of 3 1/2 minutes to pull away. CBU would trim the lead to five points (82-77) with a minute remaining, however they would get no closer.

The Falcons shot well, especially in the second half. UM was 73 percent (19-for-26) in the second half and 64 percent (36-for-56) for the game. UM also made 60 percent (9-for-15) of their 3-point baskets. UM also had a five-rebound advantage, 29-24. Caston had five assists, while Dortch added four assists and two steals.

HUMPHREY DRAINS SEVEN 3-POINT BASKETS
MONTEVALLO DEFEATS HENDERSON STATE
 

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (11/29) -- Terrill Humphrey scored a game-high 26 points, including seven 3-point baskets, to lead the University of Montevallo to a 72-53 victory over Henderson State University, in a non-conference men's basketball game in Arkadelphia, Ark. on Thursday.

Tauras Dortch also scored in double figures, finishing with 13 points. Dortch along with DeAndre Miranda grabbed six rebounds each. Dortch had three steals and three assists, while DeSean Gist had four assists.

Lucas Whisenhunt led HSU (0-4) with 14 points.

UM shot much better, in both halves, connecting on 56 percent (28-for-50) for the game and 56 percent (15-for-27) in the first half. Long distance shooting was much better as well, as the Falcons were able to convert 64 percent (11-for-17) from beyond the arc, and 70 percent (7-for-10) in first half.

Back-to-back 3-point baskets by Humphrey opened the game. Humphrey made four of his seven 3-point jumpers in the first six minutes of the game. UM held a double digit lead in the first half. HSU managed to trim the lead to six points, however a 3-point basket by Jonathon Hewitt made it a nine-point (37-28) margin at halftime.

The Falcons broke the game open in the first five minutes of the second half, putting together a 16-4 run, capped by a 3-point basket by Humphrey. UM led by as many as 24 points in the second half.

UM (3-3) will travel to Christian Brothers University for another key in-region non-conference game Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON DEFEATS MONTEVALLO IN OVERTIME
 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (11/24) -- The Falcons were outscored 12-7 in overtime as the University of Montevallo Falcons dropped a 64-59 decision to the University of Minnesota-Crookston, in second day action at the UND Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by the University of North Dakota at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D. on Saturday.

Anthony Brown led UM with 13 points and nine rebounds. Tauras Dortch also scored in double figures with 11 points, while DeAndre Miranda also grabbed nine rebounds.

Aaron Smith led UMC (1-3) with a game-high 15 points. Justin Pettycoart came off the bench to post a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

UM did not shoot well, especially in overtime. The Falcons managed to shoot 35 percent (20-of-57) from the field for the game, however just 2-of-7 (28 percent) in overtime. UMC was 38 percent (22-of-58) for the game and 4-of-7 in overtime, which included two baskets by reserve Justin Peddycoart.

There were 11 lead changes and 10 ties in the game, with the last tie coming in regulation. With UM trailing 52-50, Brown made a basket with 32 seconds remaining to tie the game at 52-52. UMC was fouled and had a chance to take a lead, however a free throw on the front-end of a one-and-one was missed, giving UM a chance to win the game. In the closing seconds, Terrill Humphrey missed a jumper,  Brown rebounded and took a shot that fell short at the buzzer.

Eric Turner made two free throws to give UM their only lead of overtime in the opening minute. UMC got the ball back, missed one 3-point basket, however collected the offensive rebound and Bryce Cummings made a 3-point basket to give UMC the lead for good. UMC built the lead to five points (59-54) with one minute remaining, when Shon Caston made a 3-point basket to make it a 59-57 game. UMC was able to score the next five points to maintain their lead.

UM (2-3) travels to Henderson State University for a non-conference game Thursday at 7 p.m.

WESTERN OREGON DEFEATS No. 15 MONTEVALLO AT UND THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT
 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (11/23) -- The No. 15 University of Montevallo Falcons suffered through a dismal shooting performance in the second half, and dropped an 80-73 decision to Western Oregon University, in first day action at the UND Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by the University of North Dakota at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D. on Friday.

UM managed to make just 8-of-29 in the second half and was 2-for-11 from the 3-point line in the half. UM led by seven (46-39) points at halftime and made the first basket of the second half for an eight point lead. A 13-4 WOU run over the first six minutes of the half tied the game at 52-52. WOU took their first lead in the second half on two free throws and took the lead for good on a 3-point basket by Dane Johnson with 7:38 remaining. A subsequent UM turnover, a WOU steal and basket made the margin four points. WOU led by as many as eight points late.

Anthony Brown led UM with 16 points, while Jonathon Hewitt added 14 points. Tauras Dortch also scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Dortch also had seven rebounds

Five WOU Wolves scored in double figures , led by Brad Krichevsky with 16 points.

UM shot better in the first half, making 53 percent (17-for-32) from the field and 57 percent (4-of-7) from the 3-point line.WOU was 50 percent (11-for-22) from the field and was 17-for-20 from the free throw line.

No. 15 MONTEVALLO DEFEATS STILLMAN
 

MONTEVALLO (11/20) -- Four Falcons scored in double figures, as No. 15 University of Montevallo posted an 84-62 victory over Stillman College, at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Tuesday night.

Terrill Humphrey scored a game-high 22 points, which included five 3-point baskets and also had a team-high four steals. Tauras Dortch scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds, had six assists and three steals. Anthony Brown and Jonathon Hewitt added 11 points each. Brown also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

UM held a decided advantage on the boards, collected close to double the number of the Tigers. UM had 47 rebounds as a team. In addition to Brown,  Eric Turner and Shon Caston grabbed seven rebounds each. 

Marquell Jones and Kenard Johnson scored 14 each to lead Stillman.

No. 15 MONTEVALLO DEFEATS No. 22 HENDERSON STATE AT UM COCA-COLA CLASSIC
 

MONTEVALLO (11/17) -- Anthony Brown posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds as No. 15 University of Montevallo defeated No. 22 Henderson State University, 62-44 in second day action at the 2007 UM Coca-Cola Classic, at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Saturday night.

Tauras Dortch, DeAndre Miranda, Jonathon Hewitt and Brian Carlyle added nine points each. Dortch had four assists, Miranda, Carlyle and Shon Caston grabbed six rebounds each.

UM survived a poor shooting night from the 3-point line. The Falcons were only able to make 18 percent (4-of-22) of their attempts, including 1-of-10 in the second half. HSU suffered through a poor first half from the field (8-for-31) and was 32 percent (17-for-53) from the field.

The Falcons slowly built a 9-2 lead, then extended the lead to double digits (12 points) by halftime. UM was able to maintain the margin through the second half.

Antoine Vinson led HSU (0-2) with 15 points.

UM (1-1) will host Stillman College for a non-conference game Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

No. 15 MONTEVALLO DROPS SEASON OPENER TO No. 9 AUGUSTA STATE AT UM COCA-COLA CLASSIC
 

MONTEVALLO (11/16) -- The No. 15 Falcons nearly made up a 25-point second half deficit and wound up dropping a 79-72 decision to No. 9 Augusta State University in first day action at the 2007 UM Coca-Cola Classic, at the People's Bank and Trust Arena and McChesney Student Activity Center Friday night.

Terrill Humphrey led UM with 25 points and tied a school single-game record with eight 3-point baskets. Antonio Walls made eight against West Georgia in 2000-01, while Jeremy Smith drained eight treys against Birmingham Southern in the 1994-95 season.

DeAndre Miranda and Jonathon Hewitt also scored in double figures for UM, finishing with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

UM could not overcome a hot shooting ASU squad that made 60 percent of their shots from the field (28-for-47) including 72 percent (13-of-18) in the second half. Long distance shooting was a key for ASU, as they were able to make 52 percent (13-for-25) of their tries. Daniel Dixon led all scorers with 27 points, which included eight 3-point baskets, seven in the first half.

UM was able to make 39 percent of their shots (27-for-69) and 33 percent (10-for-30) from the 3-point line.

ASU led by ten points (17-7) when UM put together a 10-0 run to tie the game. ASU built their lead back to double digits (32-42) at halftime as as many as 25 points (59-34), five minutes into the second half. With ASU leading by 18 points (66-48) midway in the second half, UM outscored ASU 17-5 over the next seven minutes to pull to within six points (71-65), but would not get closer. ASU would make free throws (6-of-6) in the final minute.

No. 15 MONTEVALLO NAMED GSC PRE-SEASON FAVORITE FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE SEASON
 

BIRMINGHAM (10/19) -- The No. 15 University of Montevallo Falcons received four Overall Champion votes, and was picked to win the East, it was announced in the 2007 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball release this week.

GSC coaches picked UM as the favorite to win their fourth consecutive GSC East title, receiving two first place votes and 32 points. North Alabama and Valdosta State were tied for second (27), while Alabama-Huntsville (23) was picked fourth. West Georgia (20), West Florida (11) and West Alabama (7) rounds out the division.

In the GSC West, Christian Brothers received six first place votes and 48 points. Harding (42) was second, while Delta State and Ouachita Baptist were tied for third with 33 points each.

No Falcons were named to the GSC Pre-Season Men's Basketball Team. Others named to the team from the the East Division are Henrick Foster and Terrence Hundley from West Georgia, Tyler Dunaway from UAH, Quinn Beckwith from North Alabama and Devario Hudson from Valdosta State.

UM begins the 2007-08 regular season on Friday, November 16 as UM will host the 2007 UM Coca-Cola Classic. The No. 15 Falcons will meet No. 9 Augusta State University for a non-conference game, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

KENNEDY AND HALL CONTINUING THEIR BASKETBALL CAREERS OVERSEAS
 

MONTEVALLO Former Falcons Marcus Kennedy and James Hall are currently competing with professional basketball overseas.

Kennedy signed with BBC Etzella, a member of the Diekirch Basketball League in Luxenbourg. There, he was recently recognized as a league Player of the Week after averaging 22.7 points per game in a tournament.

Hall has re-signed with BC Rakvere Tarvas, a member of the Men's Champions League in Estonia.  He concluded the 2007-08 season with Rakvere after originally signing and playing with BC Kalev/Cramo another team in the Men's Champions League.
