Family and Consumer Sciences Education

Career Options

Graduates of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education concentration teach classes in middle and high schools. They are qualified for positions in which a breadth of knowledge, of family and consumer sciences is required. Students in Family and Consumer Sciences Education do not pursue a minor.

Salary Range

Salaries of first-year teachers vary by school system. Typically, entry-level salaries range from $23,000 to $25,000.

Professional Internship

Students in this program gain a broad breadth of knowledge in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences. They have opportunities to observe master teachers and to develop their own teaching style through a supervised internship. Also, they develop competency in care for children and the elderly in an occupational competency practicum in which they observe care givers and participate in programs for children and the elderly. At the completion of their program, family and consumer sciences education students receive an Alabama Class B high school (grades 7-I2) teaching certificate.

Major Courses

In addition to the University of Montevallo General Education core and Family and Consumer Sciences core, Family and Consumer Sciences Education students take courses in all areas, of their profession. Course subjects include: apparel construction and analysis, foods, housing, textiles, quantity foods, methods of teaching, child development, adolescence, parenting, vocational education, early childhood programs, practice teaching, educational technology, reading in the content area, classroom management, evaluation, educational psychology, and exceptional children.

Minor Courses

Students in this program do not pursue a minor.
