Call Numbers
Carmichael Library uses the Library of Congress system to organize its materials.  Education materials, and other related subjects, can be found in the L call number range. Books on the teaching of a particular subject will be classified in that subject area.

The Library acquires additional educational resources from other budget lines - library general, children's and reference.

Databases Many databases and most journal subscriptions are paid from the Serials budget and are not charged to a specific budget line. However, the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) funds several databases along with access to their full text journals.

Databases

Education or education related databases: Electronic access to journal articles is available from the Databases page.  Most databases can be searched using author, title or subject in either basic or advanced search formats. The results of a search will include either a citation, a citation and abstract, or a citation, abstract and full text of the article depending on the database searched.

Listed below are databases you could use to locate information about Education.  You can access these, and other databases, from the Databases by name page or the Databases by subject page.

ERIC Index and Abstracts, with some full text ERIC is the primary database used for research in education.  It is a comprehensive database, covering all aspects of education.  Carmichael Library has access to two versions of the ERIC database.  ERIC EBSCOhost and ERIC First Search.  Both provide links to the full text of some of the ERIC documents through the Institute of Education Sciences.

Education Full Text  Full Text  (Library subscription) Education Full Text brings you comprehensive coverage of an international range of English-language periodicals, monographs and yearbooks. Full text of articles, with indexing cover to cover, from hundreds of journals, make this a one-stop source for research. Coverage includes about 79 journals (37 with full text) not covered by ERIC’s CIJE.

Child Development and Adolescent Studies, produced by NISC, is today’s source for references to the current and historical literature related to growth and development of children through the age of 21. Book reviews and abstracts from hundreds of journals and a bibliography of thousands of technical reports, books, book chapters, theses and dissertations covering biomedical and social sciences worldwide are indexed. More than 201,860 records are included with over 10,000 new records added each year.

Mental Measurements Yearbook  (Library subscription) This is the online version of the printed reference work listed above.  It contains the same information, but is easier to search.  It provides information about commonly used tests, but does not provide a copy of the test itself. Mental Measurements Yearbook, produced by the Buros Institute at the University of Nebraska, provides users with a comprehensive guide to over 2,000 contemporary testing instruments. Designed for an audience ranging from novice test consumers to experienced professionals, the MMY series contains information essential for a complete evaluation of test products within such diverse areas as psychology, education, business, and leadership. First published by Oscar K. Buros, the MMY series allows users to make knowledgeable judgments and informed selection decisions about the increasingly complex world of testing. MMY provides coverage from Volume 9 to the present.

PsycInfo  Index and Abstracts with links to full text via the Library's catalog. (Library subscription) PsycINFO , from the American Psychological Association (APA), contains nearly 2.3 million citations and summaries of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations, all in psychology and related disciplines, dating as far back as the 1800s. 97 percent of the covered material is peer-reviewed. Journal coverage, which spans 1887 to present, includes international material selected from more than 2,100 periodicals in more than 25 languages.

PsychArticles (Library subscription) PsycARTICLES, from the American Psychological Association (APA), is a definitive source of full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology. The database contains more than 100,000 articles from 59 journals - 48 published by the American Psychological Association (APA) and 11 from allied organizations. It includes all journal articles, letters to the editor and errata from each journal. Coverage spans 1894 to present.

SportDiscus  Index and Abstracts (Library subscription) Provided by the Sport Information Resource Centre, SPORTDiscus offers comprehensive, bibliographic coverage of sport, fitness and related disciplines. This database contains more than 750,000 records with journal and monograph coverage going back to 1800; over 20,000 dissertations and theses and reference to articles in 60 different languages.

Academic OneFile (AVL*) Academic OneFile is the premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources. With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects, Academic OneFile is both authoritative and comprehensive. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. Includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995. Updated daily.

Academic Search Elite (AVL*) Academic multi-disciplinary database, Academic Search Elite provides full text for nearly 4,500 journals, including full text for more than 3,600 peer-reviewed titles. PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals, and searchable cited references are provided for 1,000 titles. This database is updated on a daily basis via EBSCOhost.

America History and Life  (Library subscription). America: History and Life is a comprehensive file including abstracting and indexing of the full range of U.S. and Canadian history, area studies, and current affairs literature. The database corresponds to the print America: History and Life which is produced by ABC-CLIO. AHL includes coverage of history, interdisciplinary studies of historical interest, and history-related topics in the social sciences and humanities.

Directory of Open Access Journals (free) The aim of the Directory of Open Access Journals is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and impact. The Directory aims to be comprehensive and cover all open access scientific and scholarly journals that use a quality control system to guarantee the content.

Expanded Academic ASAP (AVL*) From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers - many with full text and images!

General Science Full Text (Library subscription) Full text articles, with page images, abstracts, indexing & more! Subjects Covered Astronomy, Atmospheric Science, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Conservation, Earth Science, Environment, Food, Genetics, Health, Mathematics, Medicine, Microbiology, Nutrition, Oceanography, Physics, Physiology, Zoology. General Science Full Text is a bibliographic database that indexes and abstracts articles of at least one column in length from English-language periodicals published in the United States and Great Britain plus the full text of selected periodicals. Periodical coverage includes popular science magazines as well as professional journals. General Science Full Text also covers The New York Times Science Section (published weekly on Tuesday). Abstracting coverage begins with periodicals published in March 1993. Abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source articles. Full text coverage begins in January 1995.

Historic Documents  (Library subscription) In CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition you can find the entire collection of the acclaimed Historic Documents print editions. The online edition is clearly organized and easy to use. And since it contains more than 32,000 print pages, it is rich in its depth and wide in its areas of coverage.

Historical Abstracts (Library subscription) Historical Abstracts indexes the world's periodical literature in history and the related social sciences and humanities. The database corresponds to the two companion publications: Historical Abstracts: Part A, Modern History Abstracts (1450-1914) and Historical Abstracts: Part B, Twentieth Century Abstracts (1914 to the Present), produced by ABC-CLIO. Historical Abstracts covers the history of the world from 1450 to the present, excluding the U.S. and Canada, which are covered by America: History and Life

History Reference Center offers full text from more than 2,000 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books, cover to cover full text for more than 120 history periodicals, 59,000 historical documents, 49,600 biographies of historical figures, more than 104,720 historical photos and maps, and more than 80 hours of historical video.

Humanities Full Text  Subjects Covered: Archaeology, Area Studies, Art, Classical Studies, Communications, Dance, Film, Folklore, Gender Studies, History, Journalism, Linguistics, Literary & Social Criticism Literature, Music, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Religion and Theology. InfoTrac OneFile (AVL*) A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social sciences, sports, technology, and many general interest topics. Millions of full-text articles. Updated daily.

LION (includes MLA) (Library subscription) Literature Online, a fully searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 194 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources.

Literary Reference Center  (AVL*) LRC is a comprehensive literary reference database, which provides users with a broad spectrum of reference information from antiquity to the present day. LRC is a completely full-text database that combines information from over 1,000 books and monographs, major literary encyclopedias and reference works, hundreds of literary journals, and unique sources not available anywhere else. LRC contains detailed information on the most studied authors and their works and is an essential resource for public, academic and high school libraries.

Literature Resource Center (AVL*) up-to-date biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on nearly 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world, supplemented by the scholarly materials of the Scribner Writers Series and Twayne's World, U.S., and English Authors Series.

MathSciNet (Library subscription) MathSciNet is an electronic publication offering access to a carefully maintained and easily searchable database of reviews, abstracts and bibliographic information for much of the mathematical sciences literature.

MLA International Bibliography (to search for full text in MLA, use LION). The MLA International Bibliography is a classified listing and subject index of scholarly books and articles on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics which has been compiled by the Modern Language Association of America since 1926. The electronic version includes the Bibliography's entire print run, and currently contains more than 2 million records. In addition, the MLA Directory of Periodicals gives full information on over 7,100 journals and book series.

Social Sciences Full Text  (Library subscription) Subjects Covered: Addiction Studies, Anthropology, Area Studies, Community Health & Medical Care, Corrections, Criminal Justice, Criminology, Economics, Environmental Studies, Ethics, Family Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, Gerontology, International Relations, Law, Minority Studies, Planning & Public Administration, Policy Sciences, Political Science, Psychiatry, Psychology, Public Welfare, Social Work, Sociology, Urban Studies. Abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source articles. Full text coverage begins in January 1995.

*AVL: Alabama Virtual Library provides students, teachers, and citizens of the state with online access to library information resources. It is primarily a group of online databases that have magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for research. Through the AVL, an equitable core of information sources are available to every student and citizen in Alabama, raising the level of excellence in schools and communities across the state.

Library Services and Borrowing

This service is used to obtain materials unavailable at this library.  When a student or faculty member identifies needed materials, checks the online catalog for availability, and determines the materials are unavailable, then he/she may complete an Interlibrary Loan Form. Using the information on the form, the library staff will identify another library that has the material, send an electronic request to borrow the material, and the lending library will send the requested material.  This process takes several days or weeks.

  • Library Reference Assistance and/or Mentors

At the ASK HERE Desk, the Library provides reference assistance to individuals doing research. Library Mentors may be assigned and/or provided for two outstanding and ongoing programs:
