“Stewart has raised the profile of the university, both statewide and nationally…since 2012, UM is the only public university in Alabama to be named a College of Distinction.” a piece of the article read, in the Vulcans Community Awards program that was held on October 8, 2015. Our own President Dr. John Stewart III was recognized as “Vulcan-Newcomer”.
This awards ceremony honors citizens who exemplify civic pride, leadership and progress within the seven-county metro area. Five award categories include: Lifetime Achievement, Servant Leadership, Hero, Game Changer and Newcomer. The Vulcans Community Awards symbolize the significant impact that community members have had on the quality of life in their community.
Since Dr. Stewart’s arrival in 2010, freshmen enrollment has increased by 17%. In the fall of 2014, his focus on incoming student enrollment resulted in the largest freshman class in the university’s history! And because of his leadership and UM’s dedication to providing students a private school experience, at an affordable price, UM was named one of America’s “100 Most Affordable Small Colleges” in 2015.
Dr. Stewart III has done a wonderful job to help guide UM to what it has become, since his arrival. The university has received multiple accolades and awards for its academic excellence, outstanding leadership and unique traditions and will continue to thrive in the future.
