What is GEAR Up Jefferson County?

GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.

GEAR UP Jefferson County (GU-JC) is a federally funded grant facilitated through the University of Montevallo which serves more than 5,000 students from Bessemer City, Fairfield City, Jefferson County, Midfield City, and Tarrant City school systems. GU-JC is designed to improve access, opportunities, and outcomes for students through a variety of supplemental educational supports.

What is Summer College at Montevallo?

Summer College is a four-week academic program designed to provide rising eleventh grade GEAR UP Jefferson County scholars an immersive educational experience on the campus of the University of Montevallo.

  • Summer College Residential Advisor (5 positions)
  • Teaching Assistant/Embedded Tutor (4 positions)
  • Summer College Residence Director (1 position)

What are the job descriptions?

Summer College Residential Advisor (undergraduate) – $12.50/hour

Resident Advisor (RA) are primarily responsible for ensuring the safety and security of scholars. In addition, they ensure effective and efficient residential operations of the Summer College at University of Montevallo, a GEAR UP initiative. They supervise and live with high school students in a residence hall setting, supervising students both in the hall and around and off-campus during field trips. RA help students acclimate to the college community in a manner that is appropriate for the high-school aged youth.

  • Experience working with high school aged youth.
Teaching Assistant/Embedded Tutor (undergraduate) – $12.50/hour

Teaching Assistant (TA) are primarily responsible for supporting high school students participating in Summer College at UM to be academically successful. They supervise and may live with high school students in a residence hall setting. TA provides supervision during classes, study hours, and mealtimes as needed. TA helps student acclimate to the college community in a manner that is appropriate for the high-school aged youth. If TA lives in the residence hall, they will also supervise students in the hall.

  • Experience tutoring, providing TA services, or working with high school aged youth.
Summer CollegeĀ  Residence Director (graduate) – $25/hour

The Hall Director is responsible for leading Summer College Residential staff and providing leadership for the residence life experience of our scholars.

  • Teaching experience or experience leading youth in summer camp programs is required.
  • Experience working with high school aged youth.
Youth Development Program Manager (graduate) – $25/hour

The Program Manager will be primarily responsible for all aspects of planning, implementing, and supervising activities designed to focus on the social and cultural development of students.
