The Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will hold a concert in Palmer Hall on the University of Montevallo campus on Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Christopher Confessore will conduct the full orchestra in the world premiere of Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (2013), composed by Joseph Landers, associate professor of music at the University of Montevallo. Landers, a prolific composer, has written more than 40 compositions in his 11 years at the University of Montevallo, commemorating such occasions as the inauguration of two university presidents and the dedication of the university’s renovated Palmer Auditorium. In 2012, he was commissioned by the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra to compose a new work for a concert marking the one-year anniversary of the tornadoes that caused many deaths and extensive destruction in that city.
The program will open with Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio, op. 72c and will conclude with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 43.
Confessore, celebrating his 11th season as a member of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s conducting staff, has established a distinguished career, conducting orchestras from San Francisco to Romania.
Daniel Szasz will be the featured violinist for this concert. Szasz, a native of Romania, began playing the violin at age six and performed his first concerto with a professional orchestra at 13. He has served as the ASO concertmaster since 1997.
