UM TRIO Upward Bound is Now Hiring Hall Staff for 2022 Summer Academy UMUB Hall Staff Application

What is TRIO Upward Bound?

TRIO Upward Bound at the University of Montevallo (UMUB) provides experiences for first-generation and low-income high school students that generate the skills and motivation necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. The purpose of TRIO Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

What is the Summer Academy?

The Summer Academy is an on-campus 6-week experience. Students may participate in the Summer Academy in one of three ways: as a residential student, a day student, and a virtual student. Residential students live on campus in a residence hall, eat meals in the cafeteria, and attend classes and activities during the day and evening. Day students commute to UM and attend academic and development classes and go home by 2:30 pm. Virtual students attend academic classes via the internet.

What positions are available?

We will hire at least one (1) male and two (2) female resident assistants (RAs) and one (1) security guard, although we may hire more RAs if the number of resident students requires it.

What are the hall staff’s responsibilities?

The residence hall staff is responsible for the supervision of UMUB students in the residence hall during the Summer Academy. Applicants for RA and security guard positions must, first and foremost, enjoy working with high school students, understand their needs, and be able to tolerate their often-irrational behavior. Preference will be given to graduate students or undergraduates over age 21.

RAs supervise UMUB residential students from 7:00 am to 8:00 am and from 5:00 pm to 11:00 pm and will be on-call between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am on a rotating basis when students are on campus. Students arrive on Sunday evenings and leave by Friday at 5:00 pm. In addition to supervising residential students in the residence hall, RAs function as tutors and supervise evening programming activities.

The security guard is on duty from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am when students are on campus. This person is stationed in the lobby of the residence hall and monitors camera feeds, goes on hourly rounds to check hallways and doors, and contacts the on-call RA, the UM Police, and the UMUB Director as appropriate when there are problems
