Restrictions on certain types of public speech in the People’s Republic of China, fortified by its “Great Firewall” and “army of censors,” remain strong in the early 21st century. Still, everyday Chinese citizens find ways to circumvention censorship, air grievances, and mobilize protest. This presentation offers a glimpse into resistance on China’s internet and the extent to which people utilize the special attributes of Chinese language in those efforts.
