Abigail's Story

From a young age, Abigail Clark dreamed of working in early childhood education.

When she became an upperclassman in high school, the junior family and consumer sciences major from Bessemer said she just had to find the right college and the right opportunities to give legs to her dream.

Abigail ClarkShe applied to several schools, but costs were a barrier preventing her from seriously considering enrollment.

And then there was the University of Montevallo, which presented her with a promising path forward.

“When I applied for colleges, I didn’t know if I could live on campus or not because I didn’t have the money,” she said. “I sought to attend the University of Montevallo because both my parents went here and when I visited, I could tell a lot of people had close relationships with one another.”

“So, I committed to Montevallo, and was awarded a Montevallo Academic Leadership Scholarship for my high GPA and ACT score, which enabled me to live on campus and become the leader I am today — a member of the Montevallo Mavens and assistant hall director in Main Hall.”

During her sophomore year she received additional scholarships from the Family and Consumer Sciences Department which paid for her meal plan and housing. With her collective scholarships, she feels she’s one step closer to the realization of her dream. She can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Scholarships have definitely made my life a lot easier,” she said. “I wouldn’t be able to live on campus, have the meal plan that I have and I wouldn’t be able to take the number of classes I’m taking to graduate on time if I didn’t have them.”

“Thanks to generous scholarship donors, I can enjoy all that UM has to offer.”
