Senior Connor Simms first arrived at the University of Montevallo with a plan to study science and eventually enter the dentistry field. However, he discovered through getting involved with his fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega, that he possessed quality recruitment and promotional skills. The Clanton native soon transitioned to the business path and is now majoring in marketing with a concentration in sales management.
After graduation, Simms plans to pursue his MBA at UM and hopes to work as a sales associate or manager for a pharmaceutical sales company or a medical equipment sales company.
Simms is a recipient of the Thera Holland Richter Phi Chi Theta Scholarship, the Shelby Academy Scholarship, the Youth Leadership Development Program Scholarship, the David W. and Diane R. Wheeler Endowed Scholarship, the Lucille B. and Kenneth M. Henderson Scholarship and the UM Leadership Scholarship. Earning these has not only lifted the financial burden of paying for college, but it has helped him build relationships with UM alums.
On top of that, Simms says scholarships bring students closer together.
“Most of us that are living on campus are recipients of some type of scholarship,” Simms said. “It’s easy to bond over the hard work and effort that we put in in high school to get our scholarships and be where we are in college today.”
Simms is president of UM’s chapter of Phi Chi Theta, a national co-ed business and economics fraternity. He is also a member of Future Alumni of Montevallo (FAM) and the UM eSports team.
Although his freshman year experience was altered by the COVID-19 pandemic, Simms was still confident in his choice to come to UM after growing close with his hallmates in Napier Hall.
“Montevallo is a bunch of random kids from different walks of life, different beliefs and different religions and opinions, and we still somehow are able to all stay in one hall and live, laugh and love and be together.”
